Okay, Simon just appeared in the studio and showed me this! Get yourself to YouTube and load up any video, in fact use the clip below.
You want something that loads slowly when you press PLAY so that the preloader appears – the dotted circle in the center of the screen. When you see it press a cursor key, up, down, left or right – you’re now playing SNAKE!
Amazing.
Ultimate kudos to Simon – how did I not know about this!?!
This is an amazing video clip about Terry Garrett, a completely blind 23 year old mechanical engineering who has figured out how to play through and beat Abe’s Exoddus.
It really is quite an outstanding achievement and I reckon there is a lot to learn for designers here, particularly for online. Web site design and accessibilty are essential ingerdients when building for a government agency but more often than not can be forgotten in favour of rich experiences for private ventures.
I’m guilty of this myself as some of the site design I did in the past was not that accessible. But it doesnt need to be that way as Abe’s Exoddus shows. Intelligent use of audio can help the partially sighted engage and have a rich experice. Furthermore a well coded and thought out design can help make the online experience better for all users, disabled or otherwise.
Kudos goes to Simon for the link. Now I need to try harder at computer games!
Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Address
I stumbled across this last night and had to post it… boggles my fragile geeky mind in so many ways when I look at this ad on my iPhone…
Great piece of animation and I like the moozics too…
